CSK VS RCB: A MATCH REVIEW

CSK VS RCB: A MATCH REVIEW

The Men in Yellow are all smiles. They have ended RCB’s four-match winning streak and picked up their own 4-match streak. What a turnaround after that thrashing at the hand of Delhi Capitals. Did RCB play the target too much and looked to get too much before the ball lost its freshness? Padikkal was brilliant with his range of shots and RCB were perfectly on course in the chase. Had to make the most of the new ball. Can’t ask more than 44/0 in 3 overs. Just had to play themselves in, keep wickets in hand and test CSKs death bowling, but Dhoni showed why he is Dhoni. Padikkal had just taken Curran for an 18-run over, and then he came to smash Chahar’s next over for 16. Most captains would have changed the bowler, but an unperturbed Dhoni stuck to Curran and got Kohli out first ball of his second over. Four more and a single of the last ball followed. The momentum changed completely. He knows he has the spinners and bowlers who can bowl cutters for the oldish ball, so he was never worried. He keeps proving time and again that keeping it simple and clarity of thought is so important to succeed. He got Thakur on and Padikkal was sent back next over.

Maxwell the in-form player for RCB was off with a couple of boundaries but Jadeja was too hot to handle for him. The left-armer got turn on this spin-friendly pitch and knocked the leg stump out. AB was completely bamboozled by Jadeja’s spin to put CSK right on top. Jadeja fired a bullet throw too to round off his contributions in all aspects of the game. An unbelievable innings with the bat, taking Harshal Patel for 37 runs in the final over, three wickets for almost nothing with the ball and a run-out too. 54/1 to 94/8, RCB just couldn’t handle pressure. The tailenders then dragged the innings all the way to 20 overs. These are not just four wins for CSK, but four convincing wins that takes their net run rate to a massive +1.612.

Virat Kohli: You have to look at it the right way. I feel this is a positive feedback for our side. A performance like this, it is good to get this out early on in the tournament. Our start was decent enough. One guy completely beat us. Today his skill was there for everyone to see. He (Harshal) bowled well and we will continue to back him. His two wickets of the set batters took momentum away from CSK before Jaddu took it away in the final over. We need to look at the loss in the right way. I am opening the innings with Dev. We will continue to test our batting depth. As a batting side we are confident. We are gonna switch the roles at some point. His (Jadeja) ability has been there for everyone to see. I am very happy to see him perform with the bat, ball and on the field. After two months, he will be back playing for India and it is always a pleasure to see your premier all-rounder do well with the bat. When he plays well and is confident, it lets out many opportunities.

MS Dhoni: He’s (Jadeja) somebody who can change the game on his own and we have seen that significant change with the bat and in tj bowling as well. It’s good to give him that extra opportunity, the extra few balls where he can express himself. It’s also important that the individual grabs the chance when you take a decision like that and he’s done that so far. Also from a strategy point the bowler’s have found it slightly more difficult to contain the left handed batsman with the slog. In that way also helps us a bit. You can’t predict quantum of win. We were also pondering whether to bat or bowl first. Heat is also a factor here. We’ve played a lot of cricket here. Whether the groundsmen have time to prepare the wicket, it’s still a good wicket. But I felt the spinners had something up their sleeve if they bowled consistently in the right areas. You can play with the field and put extra pressure on the batsman. I felt that the extra few runs jadeja scored in the last over.. that really helps because we were looking to go close to a par score 160-170 . But once you add 20-25 runs extra the opposition needs to come hard and if you get wickets in the middle or the start they need to rebuild. That was our plan today. We felt batting first was a good option. We were not doing anything drastically different from last year and I feel that’s what is important whether you win or lose. You keep hearing me or Fleming saying the same thing that we focus on the process and not on the result. Your real test of character is when results don’t go your way and that’s where you have chance earn more respect. You are still following the path you keep talking about and I’ve always felt actions speak louder than words. When you are under pressure that’s the time you follow whar you say over the period of time. I felt that’s something that gave confidence to the players. Credit to the players for how they have performed. Everybody would have felt pressure after that first game because we are coming from a lean season. That’s how it is and it’s something we have faced in our careers.

Ravindra Jadeja is the player of the match.
