What a convincing win for CSK. After the way Punjab batted in the first game and then peeping into CSK’s bowling line-up and effort, many thought we had another high-scorer at the Wankhede but CSK made great use of the toss and the grass on the surface. With no dew and a bit of grass, Chahar is a handful and so is Curran who can move the ball around. Everything went to plan for the Men in Yellow. And Chahar did plan well for today’s game but he was rewarded for his execution. Mayank’s dismissal was a peach and then Rahul ran himself out under pressure. Chahar used his knuckles quite well and it was 26/5 in no time. SRK pushed it to 106 but the target was too small on a very good batting surface once you see out the new ball. Ruturaj fell cheaply again but Moeen timed the ball sweetly to put CSK in command while Faf held anchor at one end. They lost a few quick wickets looking to finish off the game and KL did use whatever time he had to test out Meredith since he backs him to come good after the first game.
KL Rahul: There’s not much more to say. If any team loses five wickets in the first seven or eight overs, it’s always going to be catch up. They bowled well, we played some bad shots, that’s how the game goes. It (pitch) was a lot more sticky and tacky than what it looked like. Credit to the CSK bowlers, they bowled in the right channels, Deepak with his knuckle balls got a couple of wickets, getting myself run-out doesn’t help the team. Just the way we started, the pitch was still okay, it wasn’t a 100-110 wicket, maybe 150-160 sort of a wicket. But it’s a good learning for us, hopefully we can learn from these mistakes and come back stronger in the next game. We have pace in our attack, we obviously want to use that. The first game didn’t go too well for those two (Richardson and Meredith), it was their first game and I am sure they were a bit nervous. That was the chat after the game as well, that’s how IPL goes. It can be tough and cruel. Their plans were clear, they did execute it pretty well. It was good to see that they came back stronger this game and they gave us crucial breakthroughs. We’d like to review ourselves on the key points that we speak about before the game and if we stuck to those plans. Last game we got 220, this game we couldn’t get even half of it. It’s important that we learn from our mistakes and that’s the sort of team we want to be. We still want to go out there and play fearless cricket. It’s T20 cricket, more often than not you’ll score big runs but there’ll be one or two games in a season where you lose wickets like this. It’s important that we take it on the chin and move forward and get better next game.
MS Dhoni: Makes me feel very old (smiles, on being asked how he feels to have played 200 games). Been a very long journey. Different conditions, countries, a very interesting journey. I think 2011 was the last time we were happy with the Chennai wicket. After that however hard the groundsmen tried we were not happy with the wicket. Especially after relaying the ball doesn’t come on to the bat nicely. Difficult to play big shots. Here we have a very good pitch. Movement off the seam, bounce and runs. Not swinging a lot, may be something to do with the ball. So when there’s no dew it seams for an extended period. Chahar is somebody who has developed as a death overs bowler too. If I’m looking to attack and there is movement I try to bowl him out because he gets more out of the pitch. As a bowling unit we have more resources. I was looking to attack, so bowled his four overs and it helps in becoming fit because to bowl 4 successive overs you need to be fit. We wanted Moeen to bat high because we wanted to make the best use of resources we have. He’s a very good timer of the ball, plays authentic shots. I thought the LBW shout (against SRK) was high. So told him no we are not reviewing. I have always felt DRS is there to take the howlers away and not just to take a chance. You only take a chance if it’s the last over of the game or it’s someone very important.
Deepak Chahar is the player of the match.
